Raas Leela
Every November, under the full moon, the indigenous Meitei and Bishnupriya Manipuri communities in Bangladesh gather to celebrate Raas Leela, a festival rooted in the divine love story of Radha and Krishna. Legend has it that Krishna, the playful god, danced with Radha and the Gopis (milkmaids) of Vrindavan, symbolizing the pure, unselfish love between the divine and the earthly. In the Moulvibazar district, this divine love is celebrated through captivating performances, including Rakhal Nritya (dance of Krishna with the cowherds), Kirtan (devotional chanting), and the Raas Leela dance itself, where Krishna and Radha dance with the milkmaids. The festival, held annually on the whole moon night of November, has become a significant cultural event, with the 174th edition celebrated this year. In the villages of Madhabpur and Adampur, preparations are made weeks in advance. The streets are adorned with colorful decorations, and the air is filled with the sounds of drums, conch shells, and ceremonial bells. The festival's highlight is the Raas Mela (fair), where visitors can purchase Manipuri handicrafts, toys, and traditional items, offering a glimpse into the community's rich cultural heritage. Raas Leela is more than just a religious event; it celebrates love, culture, and unity. People from all walks of life, regardless of caste or creed, come together to witness this spiritual and artistic celebration. For the Manipuri community, this festival is a time to honor their faith, history, and cultural identity as one of Bangladesh's indigenous communities, and it continues to inspire all those fortunate enough to experience its beauty.

After searching through three villages, I stumbled upon a small house where a young Manipuri boy was preparing to portray Krishna in the upcoming Raas Leela festival. The family welcomed me with open arms, eager to share their story, and invited me to capture the entire event. Their generosity was humbling, and as they told me the rich history of Raas Leela, I could feel the depth of their devotion and cultural pride. The festival, which spans from dawn to the next dawn, unfolded in a divine atmosphere that was beyond words. As night fell, the air was filled with the rhythmic sounds of drums, conch shells, and bells, setting the stage for the mesmerizing dances and heartfelt performances. The fusion of beautiful movements, spiritual devotion, and the ancient stories of Radha and Krishna created a surreal experience that transcended the boundaries of time and space. Every moment I captured felt like a sacred memory, and the entire experience left an indelible mark on my heart.
